Chapter Ten

Sam let the hot soapy spray of the shower wash over her in waves of pin pricks. It had been one hell of a day. The horse spooking would have been enough to send her into a fit of rage and fear but Carlos and that kiss. That kiss is what was keeping her attention in the shower at the moment. She couldn’t remember a time when a man had kissed her like that. Well, if she were being truthful, she kissed him. And she had no idea what had come over her. That she would chalk up to adrenaline, but then he took over and kissed her back. Holy shit, it was hot. There was no denying her attraction to him.

Her body ached now just thinking about it. Thinking about him. If she wasn’t so worried about Chandra, her mother and everything else going on, she would take the time to slip her hand down and take care of the burning ache she felt, but it wasn’t the time. Carlos had put together a meeting with Evan, Chandra, Simon and herself to discuss next steps. And she was already running late as it was.

She hurriedly finished her shower and dressed. Making her way to the dining room she already heard the chatter around the table.

“I don’t understand how shutting down production will solve anything?” It was Simon. Sam didn’t even understand why Simon was here. Sure, Chandy adores him, but aside from spending her money and making her laugh he really doesn’t add any real value to their lives. He irritated Sam beyond belief. She decided to hang back and listen a little longer before making her presence known.

“Simon, we have no leads, and after the horse incident today we just can’t risk having so many people around the ranch that we can’t control. It isn’t safe.” That was Evan Bennett. Sam thought for a lawyer he was pretty astute on things like blackmail, threats of violence, and danger. She wondered how well Carlos knew his boss. Was it even possible that Evan was behind the threats? She shook her head. No way, why would he be? He was a millionaire in his own right, and besides even though she didn’t know the man well, he had a wife, a son, and another baby on the way. He didn’t really fit what she would consider the profile for the kind of threats they had been receiving. Plus, she had just met him recently, how would he have known about the doll and her mother? No, it wasn’t the lawyer.

“It doesn’t matter. My ranch, my job, my rules. We keep production shut down until I can ensure everyone will be safe.” Sam felt her heart give a slight flutter. Carlos sounded so sure of himself and his decisions. He was right, of course a movie set was too large to keep tight control on. Shutting down production was the right call. She decided to enter the room. He looked up at her and she felt a pit of warmth fill her center.
